Answers:

Q: Are your unmanned helicopters regulated by the FAA?
A: As of March 17, 2008 we have been in contact with the FAA regarding commercial operation of unmanned aircraft. We are getting mixed opinions from both the FAA and aviation attorneys. We'll continue our operations until a we get a clearer, more definitive answer.

Q: How high can the unmanned helicopter fly?

A: The helicopter range is nearly 5,000' above the ground (AGL) but for safety reasons we average altitudes of about 100-400' AGL

Q: What cameras do you use  with the helicopter?
A: For video we use MiniDV and AVCHD cameras weighing approx 2lb. Currently we use a Panasonic 3CCD GS-300 for standard definition. For high defintiion we use a Panassonic 3CCD HDC-SD1. For still photography we shoot with a Nikon D40X DSLR (10 megapixels) and various lenses or our Canon A650 (12 megapixels)

Q: Can what the camera is shooting be seen in real time?
A: Our helicopter is equipped with a 2.4ghz wireless video microwave system with an operational range of up to 2000' line of sight. This signal is monitored in real time by a camera operator and director with our 10" LCD display ground station.

Q: Can the helicopter conduct flight operations in interiors?
A: Yes, but there must be sufficient room for maneuvers. Warehouses and open factories are a viable option.

Q: Can the helicopter fly during night time?
A: Yes, we now offer this option for video. For stills we can only operate up until sunset.

Q: How long can the helicopter remain aloft?
A: Average flying time is about 5-10 minutes.

Q: Can the helicopter fly during rain?
A: Flying is not possible during rain.

Q: What is the maximum wind speed for stable and safe flying?
A: Flying is possible up to 15mph. Gusty winds make unstable shots and compromise safety.

Q: Can the helicopter operate in dusty conditions?
A: Flying particles and dust are harmful for the helicopter. For safety reasons we may dampen the helicopter's landing area with water. If wind exceeds 10mph and is blowing dust we will cease helicopter operations for safety reasons.

Q: Does the camera have zoom control?
A: Fixed focal distances are better, we normally use normal and wide angle lenses. For closer shots we fly near the subject.

Q: What about flying over crowded areas?
A: Flying over crowded areas is dangerous, we avoid this kind of shot for safety reasons.

Q: How is a chase shot performed?
A: We use a moving truck where the helicopter pilot controls the helicopter following the subject.

Q: Any special permits required for flying the helicopter?
A: No special permits are required specifically for the helicopter's operation. However, as with any commercial production, any permit requirements for commercial TV/Film shooting in general do apply.

Q: Do you offer infrared thermal imaging?
A: Currently we do not, but we can offer references for companies that do.
